چکیده

Abstract. A mathematical model for studying the passive kinematics of condylartype total knee prostheses can be useful in planning and performing total joint replacement. If the insertion location and neutral length of knee ligaments is known, the passive kinematics of the knee can be calculated by minimizing the strain energy stored in the ligaments in any angular configuration of the knee. The model considered here takes into consideration the geometry of the prosthesis, patient-specific information, and operation-specific placement of the prosthesis. Based on an energy-minimization principle, this model can be used to study the kinematics of the knee joint of a patient after total joint replacement. The effect of various articular geometries, alternative surgical placements of prosthetic devices, and intraoperative ligamentous release can be simulated. The model may be useful in preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, and the design of new prosthetic joints.

Ligament Strains Predict Knee Motion After Total Joint Replacement

A passive forward kinematics knee model was used to predict knee motion of a total joint replacement. Given ajoint angle, maps of articular surfaces, and patient-specific ligament properties, this model predicted femorotibial contact locations based on the principle of ligament-strain minimization. The model was validated by physical experiments on a commonly implanted knee prosthesis, showing ...

Dynamics of a Running Below-Knee Prosthesis Compared to Those of a Normal Subject

The normal human running has been simulated by two-dimensional biped model with 7 segments. Series of normal running experiments were performed and data of ground reaction forces measured by force plate was analyzed and was fitted to some Fourier series. The model is capable to simulate running for different ages and weights at different running speeds. A proportional derivative control algorit...

Effects of Implant Alignment on Passive Knee Envelope

INTRODUCTION: A successful surgical outcome in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) depends on multiple factors, including proper rotational and translational alignment of the femoral and tibial components. Small variation in surgical alignment of an implant could potentially have a large impact on knee performance. Several authors have studied the effects of tibial and femoral component’s internal-ex...

Comparison of the effects of external instruction exercises in combination with hip-knee strengthening on gait kinematics in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome: a randomized clinical trial.

Aims and Background: Patellofemoral pain syndrome is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, and is related to biomechanical factors of the lower extremities. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of hip and knee strengthening with internal instruction exercises on pain and dynamic knee valgus in patients with Patellofemoral pain syndrom. Materials and Methods: 50 men a...
